Air abrasion is a painless, non-drilling and softer approach to remove minor stain and decay from the teeth. An air abrasion unit is a small handpiece that blasts a micro stream of particles and air onto the teeth to spray away stain and decay. Dr. Braithwaite refers to the unit as a "mini sand blaster". The small particles are made of aluminum oxide, baking soda, or silica and help in cleaning the tooth surface. Air abrasion makes it possible for decay to rapidly be removed while conserving sound, healthy enamel. The decay and particles are then suctioned out of the mouth.
Air abrasion is gentle because it generates no pressure, vibration, sound or heat. In addition, it minimizes or totally eliminates the need for anesthesia, making it a great choice for children and those who experience dental anxiety.
