Benefits of Botox - Not Only Cosmetic

This is not a Provo Family Dentistry patient, but a visual representation of what Botox treatments can achieve.

You may have a preconceived idea of what Botox is. While this treatment does have wonderful cosmetic benefits, there are many other, maybe even painful issues it can help solve. We’d like to share what Botox can treat!

Headaches

A tremendous benefit of Botox can be the relief of headaches or even migraines.

How does this work?

Botulinum toxin blocks neurotransmitters that carry the pain signals in your brain. Botox can act as a block to the pain’s path to the brain. It can stop the “pain chemicals” before they arrive at the nerve endings around your head.

While this process can greatly lessen the severity of recurring headaches or migraines, it does not solve whatever underlying problem is causing them. While you work to discover these underlying causes, this treatment can provide you with some relief!

Bruxism

If you experience bruxism (jaw clenching) throughout the day or through the night, you know how frustrating it can be. Waking up with jaw or even tooth pain can be disheartening.

How can Botox help me?

Botox can help alleviate painful jaw clenching by basically freezing those muscles (mainly the masseter muscle) that tense up during the act. This lack of tension helps to relax your mouth and face, and prevent the clenching from taking place.

Gummy smile

We truly believe all smiles are beautiful. We also understand that having a gummy smile can affect someone’s confidence and ability to freely smile.

What can Botox do to fix this?

Only a few units of Botox are necessary to help fix a gummy smile. The units are injected into the area between your lips and nose to temporarily freeze the muscles that contract when you smile. This allows you to smile without showing your gums!

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

This cosmetic treatment is very popular, and a great reason to try out Botox! With the ability to target specific areas, you can tailor this treatment for exactly what you want. Whether your problem areas include crow’s feet, forehead,

How does it work and how long does it last?

As we learned above, Botox blocks certain chemicals and signals from the nerves to the muscle. When the muscle is injected, it cannot contract anymore. The treatment only takes a few minutes to complete but can take a week or so to take full effect. Your wrinkles can remain tightened for 2-6 months. It is common for your very first botox treatment to last a shorter time, but often lasts longer after your second treatment.
